Minutes of December 11, 2004 Board of Deacons Meeting

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Deacons Board Meeting

December 11, 2004

Deacons Present:  Craig LeVere, Gladys Eckman, Rose Rupple, Pricilla Foos, Martha Cosby, Mary McElwain, Caroline Suppes, Sheryl Johnson and Claire Scherer.

Also present were the new Deacons for 2005 – Gail Brand, Judy Wallace, Dot Lindsey and Dennis Scholes.  Pat Wegman came at 9:15 a.m.

Absent:  Jac Cuney

Craig LeVere called the meeting to order.

Opening Devotion:  Was given by Martha Cosby with an opening prayer.

Secretary’s Report: Copies of the November 8, 2004 minutes were distributed and read through in advance.  Pricilla made a motion to accept the November Minutes.  Martha seconded the motion.  All board members in favor.  The Secretary’s Report was approved.

Treasurer’s Report:  Claire went over the November Treasurer’s report.  There has been little activity  - postage, deposit of the Wal-Mart Grant and more auction funds, the flowers for the shut-ins and a benevolent request.  There were no transactions in savings.  Rose made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report.  Mary seconded the motion and all were in favor.  The Treasurer’s Report was approved.

Session Report:  No one attended the November Session Meeting.

Committee Reports:

Communications Committee – Martha – 22 Women attended a Holiday Brunch at Judy Wallace’s house.  The next women’s event is being planned at Linda Nudd’s after the holidays.

Compassion Committee – Claire –Nothing to report.

Assistance Committee – Jac – No Report.

Events Committee – Craig – Late funds from the auction are still coming in otherwise no new events.  As a reminder for 2005 Deacons, they need to plan to get their events on the calendar as soon as possible in 2005.  The plant sale is usually in May around Mother’s Day and then the Deacon Festival is in the fall.

Unfinished (Old) Business:  Discussion of the forming of a coalition of 6 community churches was on the agenda.  Jody has meet with the group again and they are preparing to begin in 2005.  Craig reviewed the information for our new members based on what we discussed in November.  The funds would be given to Almost Home where they have criteria for distributing the funds to those for benevolent requests.  We would start out giving quarterly to see how this coalition is going to work.  Gladys made a motion to give $500 to start and then re-evaluate during first quarter.  Rose seconded the motion and all board members were in favor.

New Business:  Elections for the 2005 Board of Deacons was conducted.  Following are the new officers:

Chairperson:  Martha Cosby

Vice Chair:  Gladys Eckman

Secretary:  Dot Lindsey

Treasurer:  Claire Scherer

Pricilla made a motion to accept the officers as listed.  Caroline seconded the motion and all were in favor.

In 2005, the board will be a deacon short.  There will only be 11 but by combining some of the parish lists and deleting the inactive members, it should make for 11 full parish lists.

Claire has agreed to redo the parish list board in the hallway in the Narthex.  New parish lists will not be posted until Martha can meet with Jody and get the lists revised.

Pastor’s Report:  Pastor Lynn was not present at this meeting.

Prayer Requests:  For Judy’s sister-in-laws Mother, Violet who has cancer, Sheryl for Ruth Pugel who has had medical issues, Larry Caudill, Pricilla who finished radiation, Lamar Henry, Jac Cuney, Mike Tracey’s Mother who passed away and Martha’s Dad’s niece (Laura) whose 11 year old son passed away.

Closing Devotion:  By Martha Cosby

Adjournment:  Gladys made motion to adjourn and Pricilla seconded.

After adjournment, members of the board delivered poinsettas to the shut-ins or those designated.

Next Meeting:  January 10, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.

January Deacon is Claire Scherer.

Respectfully Submitted,

Sheryl A. Johnson
