Minutes of May 12, 2005 Board of Deacons Meeting

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Deacons Board Meeting

May 12, 2005

Deacons present:  Martha Cosby, Dot Lindsey, Caroline Suppes, Claire Scherer, Dennis Scholes, Judy Wallace, Pricilla Foos, Gladys Eckman, Rose Rupple, and Gail Brand.

Absent:  Pat Wegman

Martha Cosby called the meeting to order at 7 PM.

Pricilla gave the opening devotion.

Secretary’s Report:  It was moved and seconded that the minutes of the previous meeting be accepted as corrected.  (The correction was with regard to the amount of offering received on Maundy Thursday; it should have been $444.00.)  Motion carried.

Treasurer’s Report:  It was moved and seconded that the treasurer’s report be accepted as printed.  Motion carried.

Ministry of Care Director, Jody Pierce, presented an overview of the Pennock Counseling Center, including a brief history of the Ministry of Care (MOC).  The center is located at the corner of 21st and Egbert and has 6 licensed therapists, including a bilingual therapist.  The cost of the services offered is on a sliding scale.  Jody screens all requests and needs and tries to select the therapist best able to meet those needs.  The center offers a ten-week grief support program in partnership with Tabor Funeral Home. MOC will be offering adult church school classes in the future, and would be more than willing to offer mini in-services to the Deacons on such topics as grief and loss, aging, long term illnesses, family crises, taking care of care-givers, etc.  All the Deacons agreed that these in-services would be very valuable.  Jody is also readily available to answer any questions that might arise as we “shepherd” the members of our parishes.

Committee Reports:

Communications: The April 23rd Salad Luncheon was well attended.  The June Ladies Day Out event will be the Cancer Walk on June 10th and 11th, at Overland Trail Middle School.  The August event will be the “Women of Faith” convention on August 19th and 20th.

Compassion: A thank you” note was received from the Anthony family and the Reynolds family.

Assistance:  A letter was received from Almost Home Inc., thanking us for our donation to the Ministerial Benevolent Fund.  They will provide a quarterly report of expenditures.

Events:  (See “Unfinished Business”)

Unfinished Business:  The Plant Sale will be May 14th and 15th.  All the Deacons signed up to help with preorder sorting on Friday, or sales on Saturday and/or Sunday.

New Business: The members of Parish 4 were distributed among the other 11 parishes.

Pastor’s Report:  Lynn asked if anyone would take on the responsibility of a booth for the Brighton Culture Fest on June 4th.  Martha and Caroline volunteered to chair the planning committee.  Church members will be asked to donate time in the booth on that Saturday, handing out information about First Presbyterian Church of Brighton and our community outreach programs: The Children’s Center, and Ministry of Care, if they do not have a booth.

Lynn asked that we be especially sensitive to the needs of several in our parishes who are coming up on the one -year anniversary of a significant loss to them and to their families. This includes the Gaedes, George Phillips, and Kay Dreyer.  Also, keep John and Margaret Gamble in our prayers.

Pricilla asked if an Elder was assigned to Parish 9.  Due to recent resignations, there is no Elder assigned to this parish.

We asked again if there was a need for a Deacon to sit outside the church office on Sunday mornings to answer the phone.  It was decided that there is no need to answer the phone since the answering machine includes service times, which is the most frequently asked question, and gives callers the opportunity to leave a message for any of the church staff.  However, Deacons may need to be in the Narthex during the early service to assist with donut and coffee set-up.

Session Report:  Since all Deacons were invited to the last Session meeting there was no special report.

Prayer Requests: In addition to those already mentioned, we were asked to pray for Pricilla’s friend, Barbara; Caroline’s son, Eric; Jamie Hosmer; and Judy and Don Wallace.

Pricilla gave the closing devotion.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:03 PM.  The Deacons then adjourned to the sanctuary for communion training.

The next meeting will be on June 13th at 7 PM at MARTHA COSBY’S HOME!

The June Deacon is Martha Cosby.

Respectfully submitted,

Dot Lindsey, Secretary
